She began her actingcareer  in the 1990s and made a name for herself by playing the lead female role in Dominique Farrugia's Delphine 1, Yvan 0 in 1996 and was awarded the Romy Schneider Prize in 1997. The same year she won the Best Actress Award for Laurent Bouhnik's Sélect Hôtel at the Brussels Film Festival and in 2009 she won the same award for 8 fois debout by Xabi Molia in Tokyo.
Since the beginning of her career in 1993, she has been shooting for big names in European independant cinema such as Costa-Gavras, Agnès Varda, Élie Chouraqui, Nicolas Boukhrief, Patrice Leconte and Bertrand Tavernier.


Julie Gayet gave a masterclass at Les Arcs Film Festival in 2019 as part of the Lab Femmes de cinéma and presented us her new documentary FilmmakErs co-directed with Mathieu Busson.
