Born in Algiers to artist parents, Daniel Auteuil grew up in Avignon. He moved to Paris at the age of 16 and enrolled at the Cours Florent drama school.

After landing his first film role in 1975, he rose to prominence in 1980 with Claude Zidi’s Les Sous-doués. His breakthrough came in 1986 with his portrayal of Ugolin in Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, for which he won the César Award for Best Actor.

His career continued to flourish through collaborations with directors such as Claude Sautet (A Heart in Winter), André Téchiné (My Favorite Season), Patrice Chéreau (Queen Margot), Nicole Garcia (The Adversary) and Michael Haneke (Hidden).

In the 2010s, Daniel Auteuil turned to directing, making three films adapted from the works of Marcel Pagnol. He also returned to the stage, directing two theatrical productions. He continued to work with filmmakers such as Nicolas Bedos (La Belle Époque), Yvan Attal (Le Brio) and Fred Cavayé (Farewell, Mr. Haffmann), and more recently appeared in films by Rebecca Zlotowski (A Private Life) and Agnès Jaoui (L’Objet du délit).

His two most recent directorial works, Le Fil (2023) and La Troisième nuit (2026), were both presented at the Cannes Film Festival.
