Her ambiguous relationship with Kristina and the intense, cult-like environment of the modelling school force Maria on a quest to discover her own identity.
Toxic by Saulė Bliuvaitė is an uncompromising portrait of distraught Lithuanian youth that delivers a subtle discourse on the cult of the body and the perception of adolescent girls in our European societies. A destabilising and visceral first film, rich in symbolism, which marks the discovery of a raw talent as a director.

Io, Capitano tells the adventurous journey of two young men, Seydou and Moussa, who leave Dakar to reach Europe. A contemporary Odyssey through the pitfalls of the desert, the horrors of detention centres in Libya and the dangers of the sea.
We will also have the honour of welcoming a leading figure in Italian cinema: director Matteo Garrone. On Thursday 19 December, he will be giving a masterclass on his latest film, Moi capitaine, winner of the Silver Lion at Venice. We will also be screening two of his most iconic films: Dogman and Gomorrah.

A real tour de force, Bogdan Mureșanu's The New Year That Never Came is a hyperlink film about the last days of Ceaușescu's dictatorship. A first Romanian film about the importance of the collective in overcoming oppression, it is also a nod in the direction of the history of contemporary Europe.
