Matthias Schoenaerts was revealed in 2011 thanks to Michaël Roskam's film Bullhead. His performance earned him international and critical recognition. The film was also nominated in 2012 for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. In 2012, Jacques Audiard cast him opposite Marion Cotillard in the film Rust and Bone. The film was selected for the Official Competition at Cannes, and was nominated at the Golden Globe, the BAFTAs and César awards, where Matthias was awarded the César for Best Actor. Schoenaerts has made a string of films in Europe and the United States, including Thomas Vinterberg's Far from the Madding Crowd, Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl, Luca Guadagnino's A Bigger Splash, Alice Winocour's Disorder and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre's The Mustang. The films Canterburry Glass by David O. Russell, The Way Of The Wind by Terrence Malick and the series Django will be released shortly.

Matthias was guest of honour at the festival in 2021.
