Good bye, Lenin!
Wolfgang BECKER
Germany
Alex, 21 years old (Daniel Brühl), a young East Berliner, learns of the fall of the Wall while his mother (Katrin Sass) lies in a coma following a heart attack that struck her down as she was crossing the city in turmoil, unaware of the reason.
His mother had always been an active woman, enthusiastically taking part in the activities of a choir. Months go by, but the coma persists; the city is changing — Western cars now roam the streets, advertisements cover the walls. After eight months, she opens her eyes to a city she can no longer recognize. Alex is determined to spare her a brutal shock that her weakened heart could not bear…
Taking advantage of her being bedridden, and with the help of his family and friends, he rebuilds around her the familiar world she once knew. He gathers the young singers from the choir — who no longer sing the same songs — seeks the help of a former cosmonaut, once a hero of the people, now turned taxi driver, and strives to bring the GDR back to life within the 79 square meters of their apartment, restored to socialist standards.
