About us

Les Arcs Film Festival in a few words

An idea two kids from the mountains and working in cinema came up with, the Festival was born in 2009 with the ambition of becoming one of the key events of European cinema. It takes place every year in the ski resort Les Arcs, the first week of the winter season, right before Christmas.

Through a demanding program, yet open to a large audience, of 80 feature films and 40 short films, the Festival promotes contemporary talents and celebrates European energy and creativity. The greatest directors and actors/actresses have come to present and defend their films in front of an ever growing audience, that counted more than 21 000 people in 2019. French cinema and entertainment are also highlighted through a program of 12 feature films screened each year, in the presence of the teams.

Our selection is divided between a competition, judged by a prestigious jury (short and long form films), a focus on a country, a region or a theme, a "Playtime" section (European successes), the "Hauteur" section (arthouse cinema), premieres (French films), youth-oriented films and specials screenings. We also offer masterclasses, cine-concerts, a Femme de Cinéma Prize, and a Cinema and environmental commitment Prize.

Meeting people, sharing, discovering and committing to specific issues are all part of our welcoming festival. The audience can rub shoulders with professionals in a relaxed atmosphere, on ski slopes or dark theaters, during concerts or over a fondue...

Open to all, it takes place in three cinemas in Bourg Saint Maurice, two in Arc 1800, and one in Arc 2000 (accessible through Arc 1950). Our prices are voluntarily attrative to allow everyone, locals or vacationers, to come and party. For one exceptional week, hotels in Bourg Saint Maurice and in Les Arcs offer prices among the lowest of the season, a unique opportunity to enjoy the best of both the mountains and cinema!

Prepare your stay in Les Arcs

Finally, Les Arcs Film Festival is actually two professional events in one, the Industry Village and the Sommet Distributors-Exhibitors, that make the festival a key event for the cinema industry professionals.

Les Arcs Film Festival has been a privileged space, since its first edition, for professionals of the European independant cinema industry, to meet and exchange. Its professional side has made the Festival famous beyond the European borders, and earned it the flattering nickname of "European Sundance".

Through two professional events, the Industry Village and the Sommet Distributors-Exhibitors, we aim to highlight every link of the chaine: directors, music composers, producers, distributors, vendors, festival programmers, theater exhibitors. Most of all, we encourage creation, European coproduction and the traffic of films in Europe.

In concrete terms, the Industry Village gets together about fifty film projects that have the opportunity during 3 days to meet potential financial partners. Year after year, many projects were born in Les Arcs - we call them the Arcs "snowflakes" - and then went on to be selected in the greatest festivals (Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Toronto) and even won Oscars. Les Arcs thus became a key event for professionals of the industry across Europe, looking for the new gems and faces of European cinema.

The Sommet Distributors-Exhibitors allows for the promotion of European films to French arthouse theaters. It facilitates relationships between film distributors (charged with the promotion of films by producers and their diffusion on our screens) and theater exhibitors. It is also a laboratory in the research on new trends and the consequences of new technology on the silver screen. In 2020, the Sommet will make a point to remind everyone of our attachment to the Big Screen !
